About the TIES ProgramWhat: TIES immerses middle school teachers in the culture of biomedical research and equips you to bring an authentic experience of science back to the classroom. A typical day in TIES involves hearing from and interviewing a variety of OHSU’s basic and clinical researchers and their research teams. You also visit researchers at work, gaining first-hand experience of life in the lab or clinic. By the end of the TIES experience you will generate two resources for your classrooms – a public-friendly science poster that can be hung outside the classroom and scientist laboratory, and a preliminary classroom activity that is refined through the school year and at two call-back days. Instead of posters, previous TIES teachers completed a piece of writing about their experiences in the labs and clinics called a researcher profile. Who: Middle-school science and non-science teachers are invited to apply to TIES, preferably in pairs that team-teach at the same school. Twelve new teachers are selected to participate each year. TIES serves the Portland metro area during 2006-2008, and will serve Oregon’s rural teachers in 2009-2010. TIES alumni are invited to apply as returning teachers, to pursue their own science investigations, refine classroom activities and facilitate the experience of first-year teachers. Meet the TIES staff When: The 2008 Portland metropolitan area TIES program will take place over three weeks in July, with callbacks in January and March, 2009. The rural TIES program, beginning in summer 2009, will be a 9-day residential course in Portland. Please see the calendar for important TIES dates from now to 2010!
Where: TIES takes place on two campuses of OHSU – the Marquam Hill campus, home to the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (OCTRI), and the OHSU West Campus in Beaverton, home to the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC). Incentives: TIES participants receive:
