TIES Fieldtrips

Fieldtrips are one of the benefits associated with the TIES experience.  Each teacher participant is invited to bring their classes to either the Oregon National Primate Research Center, or to the Oregon Zoo.

  • The ONPRC fieldtrip includes a presentation delivered at your school about the mission, history, and current research studies at the Center, as well as a general discussion about the need for non-human primates in research.  This is followed by a visit to the Center, and a brief (20 minute) presentation about monkey behaviors. Students then visit the outdoor primate housing facilities, where they observe and record monkey behaviors using an ethogram. (Students should dress for the weather!)
  • Approximate time: 90 minutes (plus travel time)
  • Maximum Number of students: 60

  • The Oregon Zoo fieldtrip includes a visit to the Zoo and a presentation from animal behavior researchers. During the presentation, researchers from both the Zoo and the Primate Center talk about measuring animal behavior in captivity, and the benefits of training to decrease stress and increase their psychological wellbeing.
  • Approximate time: 2 hours (plus travel time)
  • Number of students: up to 60 per presentation (multiple presentations possible on a single day; please contact us for details)
