A Typical Day in TIES

The TIES program consists of a mixture of group sessions where you will hear from and interview scientists and clinicians about their work, and time in your teacher pairs in the lab.  Each pair will work with a team of researchers at the OHSU Marquam Hill campus and on a similar topic with another team at the Oregon National Primate Research Center.  These topics have included sleep, obesity, nutrition, stem cells, nicotine in pregnancy and reproductive health.

Week 1 focuses on clinical research and takes place at the Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute on OHSU’s Marquam Hill campus. Clinical research is research that involves human subjects.  Topics covered in week 1 could include: What is a clinical trial? What does it mean to be a human subject? How are we tackling the obesity epidemic?

Week 2 focuses on basic research and takes place at the Oregon National Primate Research Center on OHSU’s West Campus in Beaverton.  Basic research generally involves asking fundamental questions about “how things work,” including disease processes.  It often involves the use of animals, or cell culture.
